“They were” from וְהָיוּ (vehayu), indicating realized state from command.

“As lights” = לִמְאֹרוֹת (li-me’orot), retaining plural sense of light-giving sources.

“In the expanse of the heavens” renders בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמַיִם (birqia ha-shamayim), consistent with earlier phrasing (v.14).
